Second Impact Syndrome

Children and adolescents are also susceptible to what is referred to as “second impact syndrome” or catastrophic diffuse cerebral swelling which can result in death or severe disability.
Second impact syndrome can be occasioned by an impact during the same game or practice session which is why it is imperative that an injured player not return to the session.
Similarly it appears that the brains of these individuals may be susceptible to a second impact several days, weeks or months after an initial injury.

  • “Second Impact Syndrome”  (diffuse cerebral swelling)
  •  Catastrophic brain swelling leading to death or long term impairment
  • Due to second head impact on the same day/game or in subsequent days, weeks or even months

NEVER return a young player with a head injury to the game or practice
